The Advantages of Coaching in Banking Paula Pace & Danielle Crough C OACHES IN NEBRASKA GET A LOT of attention—especially if you happen to coach our beloved Husker football team. Our coaches receive this attention because of their ability to draw the best per- formance from players. Coaches play a huge role in players’ lives. They take good players andmake them great play- ers, and they take time to understand struggling players to help them start excelling again. Here in Nebraska, we understand the great impact of coach- ing. However, the question remains: Are we too quick to dismiss the benefits of having a coach at our own jobs and in our own banks? Our employees also need a good coach. Sometime you are the coach—whether you are the owner, the vice president, or the manager. You coach your team. And sometimes you—the owner, vice president, and manager—need to get other coaches involved; the question is, to whom do you turn for coaching? Just like there are many coaches on a football field, many of our employees would benefit from coaching, both externally as well as internally. External coaches are extremely valu- able in the following situations: • You are ready to retire and you have a successor but that succes- sor could use some help getting started. • You are ready to retire and you don’t have a successor—what to do? • You have a leadership team comprised of six or seven man- agers who need help in working together and moving the bank forward. • You have an out s t anding employee who needs help reach- ing her potential. • Your son will take over the bank, but needs help to be a good leader. • As the owner, you are doing a pretty good job, but how do you take it to the next level? Business (also known as execu- tive) coaching is one-to-one interac- tion between a bank owner/leader or employee and a coach who is not tied to the organization or other executive or company influences. The coach can provide a focus that those attached to the bank cannot. An external coach can provide an opportunity to focus, explore, grow, and achieve that is unique to the coaching experience. Lorna Rein in her article “What Is Executive Coaching” says, “Coaching develops the leader in ‘real time’ within the context of their current job while allowing them to maintain their day-to-day responsibilities.” We cannot tell you how coaching can help you until we know what you need—until we talk with you about how you want to develop your leaders, grow your managers, and create a solid team. The good news is that you will have an opportunity to explore the benefits of executive coaching at the NBA Bank Executive Conference, which will be held Feb. 24-28, 2016, in Orlando, Fla. Executive coaches Danielle Crough and Paula Pace will work with you in a group setting much the same way your team would work with a coach. In the process, you will discover the power of group coaching. In addition, you will see how we work with people on an individual basis and just what may be needed in your bank. During this coaching session in Or- lando, you will have an opportunity to: • Gain additional information about individual, group, and team coaching. • Discover how succession plan- ning is strengthened through coaching. • Give your emerging leaders the
