I’m sure you have bright people, but who is both bright and motivated? And don’t make the mistake of assuming motivated people will find their way to greatness; instead, these are the people who are great coaching candidates. Your responsibility is to direct and develop their motivation. Don’t leave it to chance. 2. Once identified, what do these motivated people need to sharpen, learn, discover, or explore in or- der to be who you need them to be? Implementing a coach is the first step; the second is working with the coach to identify the growth path of the person (or people) being coached. What do you want and what do you need from those you have identified as leaders? How do they need to grow? What is their poten- tial? Then bring the coach and coachee together, identify your vision, and let the process begin. 2. If not us, then you? You, in some form or fashion, have been coaching your entire life and career. The question is have you been doing it well? Consider the time you spend working with staff to understand their positions—to carry on the work of the day. Now add the en- ergy needed to guide, motivate, and challenge people to be their best, to make the extra effort, to accomplish beyond what they currently can offer. Have you been giving enough of your time and energy to those whowill lead the bank? If not us, then you. Learn how to be a good coach. Be the coach your team needs to go beyond the everyday normal. In this world of change, we need more than everyday normal. Give your staff time and energy. Listen. Engage and challenge. Identify others in your bank who have the poten- tial to coach others and pull them into the process. It will pay off in the future. Grow your executive strength. Iden- tify and coach those who will lead your bank tomorrow, those who will bring fresh ideas to your community, those who will lead others in the never-ending march to service and profit.
