The Christa McAuliffe Prize honors this special form of courage. Bankers can help support education by nominating a teacher in their community. Z “The prize recognizes an often over- looked form of courage—the courage of Nebraska teachers,” said Wright. As a pediatrician who had worked in various schools inTexas througha special pediat- rics programand later served as director of the Nebraska Department of Health, Wright recognized the importance of teachers acting courageously—thosewho were willing to rely on their convictions to teach in difficult situations and often with little recognition. 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Challenger explosion and the 25th winner of the ChristaMcAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education. Wright and Olson believe that chil- dren and the quality of their education determine the long-term prosperity of all businesses, including banks. Almost every Nebraska community has a bank and a school system that often work together for the betterment of their children and their community. “It’s really an obligation of any financial institution to help the younger genera- tions as they prepare for their future,” said Olson. “The highest priority for parents is to make certain their chil- dren receive a good education. Banks can play an important role in this by supporting their school system.” Olson noted that inmany cases stu- dents will return to their communities to pursue careers after schooling, as he and Wright both did. “This is another reason banks should be active support- ers of education in their communities,” Olson said. “Involvement with schools can improve the economic develop- ment of all communities and can pay big dividends to the bank,” he added. “A bank’s involvement in helping their schools recognize and honor a courageous teacher can demonstrate the interest that banks and all busi- nesses should have in supporting out- standing teachers in their community,” stated Olson.
