www.nebankers.org 8 Extraordinary Service for Extraordinary Members. T HE BANKERS—INCLUDING JOHN Bothof, president, Northwest Bank, Omaha, Neb., and Mark Linville, president and CEO, First State Bank, Randolph, Neb.— wanted to remind their lawmakers that some policies do more harm than good by interfering with banks’ ability to serve their customers. I cannot stress enough how impor- tant these conversations are. As bank- ing leaders, you stand for prosperity for ordinary people in communities across the country. Washington decision-makers need to be reminded of that continually so that they make decisions that will help bankers like you help your communities. Our Government Relations Sum- mit, which will take place March 19-21 in Washington, is a key oppor- tunity for bankers to “talk to power” and continue this important dialogue about banking’s role in the nation’s economy. Keep in mind, too, that our legislative advocacy helps shape the regulatory process. In 2012, the bank regulatory agency leadership will be completely new, which pro- vides an exceptional opportunity to reach out to regulators. Last year, nearly 1,000 bankers— unified in mission and purpose— joined ABA and the state bankers associations in Washington for this important event. It’s critical that we again show the strength and conviction of our united industry in 2012. We’re also asking you to bring along your directors, senior management, and other staff members who can help tell lawmak- ers how your bank makes a difference in your community. Please know that no prior expe- rience meeting with a member of Congress is necessary. We’ll make sure all summit participants are fully briefed on the industry’s issues through both on-site orientation and a pre-summit conference call. Another important note: ABA’s GR Summit will be held at the same Washington Update When members of ABA’s Community Bankers Council recently met in Washington, they made it a point to take the time to visit with their members of Congress to talk about the industry’s top policy priorities. visit us online! www.nebankers.org Q Power — continued on page 10
