March | April 2014 7 Extraordinary Service for Extraordinary Members. t he nBa’s fiscal Year ends april 30th. Between now and then a number of things will take place as we wrap up this year and reload for the next. At its March meeting, the NBABoard of Directors will approve an individual for nomination as chairman-elect of the association and several in- dividuals to replace directors rolling off our board as their terms expire. The board also will approve the fiscal year 2014-2015 budget for the association. This year’sMarch boardmeeting will be unique in that we will be introducing the NBA’s Successor President and CEO Richard Baier, as he becomes acquainted with the officers of the NBA and begins to meet many of you. Over my 23 years as your executive, I have had the great fortune of spendingmany hours with the leadership of the NBA. While each chairman has brought his or her own perspective to the job, they all have shared a strong desire to give something back to the banking industry. One of the greatest benefits of my position is that I have had the opportunity to develop many close friendships with some of the best bankers in the country. My relationships with those bankers and with many of you will endure for years to come. Another thing that will continue beyond my tenure is the rhythm of the legislative process, both in Lincoln and in Washington, D.C., as we move through elec- tion cycles and campaigns. The NBA’s work and schedule are specifically designed to fit the ebb and flow of legislative events to ensure that our focus remains sharp and effective along the way. Our legislative and political success is the product of “gentle pressure relentlessly applied” by NBA lobbyists and most importantly by the contacts you, our member bankers, make with our legislators. In the January/February issue of this magazine, we featured Speaker of the Unicameral Greg Adams in our first Legislative Profile column. This issue highlights Chairman of the Banking, Commerce, and Insurance Committee Mike Gloor. We all too often forget the leadership our state senators provide for Ne- braska; it’s usually much easier to criticize than to simply say “thank you.” At the NBA, we are thankful that men and women from all walks of life are willing to make the personal sacrifice necessary to serve in our Unicameral. As we head into the May primary, remember it does make a difference who we elect to represent our interests within the government. Pro-business- minded people who are fiscally responsible serving in elected offices are what we need to keep our state moving forward. Thank you to Sens. Adam and Gloor, and their colleagues, for their service to our state.  PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Some Things Will Never Change 233 South 13th Street, Suite 700 Lincoln, NE 68508 Phone: (402) 474-1555 • Fax: (402) 474-2946 NBA Board of Directors NBA Editorial Staff George Beattie NBA President & CEO george.beattie@nebankers.org Joni Sundquist Vice President of Communications joni.sundquist@nebankers.org John P.
