Similarly, the Nebraska State Education Association (the teacher’s union) spent more than $210,000 in support of state legislative candidates. In one targeted legislative race, NSEA spent more than $29,500. One unique change to the political landscape in Nebraska is the sudden increase in the size and scope of independent expenditure organizations. These groups often have positive, yet generic names like “Coalition for a Greater Nebraska.” During the most recent election cycle, as an example, “Citi- zens for a Better Nebraska” contributed more than $191,700 on Legislature races—that’s more than the total of all NBA contributions. Recent reporting by the Nebraska Account- ability and Disclosure Commission filings indicate the larg- est contributors to “Citizens for a Better Nebraska” included the International Association of Fire Fighters, Nebraska State Education Association, Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Again, the Nebraska banking industry must work aggressively to support pro-business candidates for our important leadership positions. Finally, I would be remiss in closing my comments this month if I failed to extend a special thank you to two of our retiring elected leaders, U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns and Gov. Dave Heineman. I had the privilege of personally working for both of these distinguished gentlemen. Sen. Johanns is a quiet but exceptionally passionate leader who served our state and country admirably. He is remembered as a leader that simply got things done! Gov. Heineman, who is now the longest serving governor in Nebraska history, was tireless in his efforts to support job growth and lower taxes, and encour- age quality educational opportunities across our state. Gov. Heineman traveled extensively to all corners of the state and successfully managed the state through some very volatile economic times. Both of these gentlemen have left a lasting imprint on the future of our great state. For that, we extend our heartfelt thanks and best wishes in wherever their new paths take them! 
